Painting is an act of discovery. I work in an improvisational manner, welcoming chance elements, experiments and accidents. The paint controls me as much as I control it, and I relish the infinite possibilities of color, shape, line, and composition. Sometimes images emerge that may evoke a more specific correlation to the natural world. But it’s not important that the viewer sees the same things I see. For me, the beauty of abstraction is that it can be free from representation, and that hue, light, and form may be enjoyed in a similar way in which one experiences melody, rhythm, and harmony in music, without narrative superimposition. The act of painting, and the viewing of painting, can involve emotional and spiritual transcendence as well as more tangible elements or associations, which need not be named or quantified. These pieces are all square and range in size from 1’x 1‘ to 4’x 4’.

In 2008 my ongoing fascination with the square format began.

In the early 1990’s my work started a shift away from figurative representation and toward abstraction. This is a selection of pieces created between 1995 and 2007, which are still available for purchase.

Raggedy Rugs by Miss Joan--These rugs are lovingly hand crocheted, made from recycled cotton fabrics. Each is a unique piece: rustic Americana fashioned with a painter’s eye for color and love for utilitarian folk art. They may be machine washed and dried using gentle cycle and low heat. A non-skid pad may be used if desired.
